Sister of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity Karen Boccalero, a student of Sister Corita Kent, created Self Help Graphics in a garage in East Los Angeles in 1971 to empower Latino youth to express themselves artistically.  She encouraged exploration of Latino culture and history and revived the traditional El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration in November.
