In the early 1980s civil strife and repression in Central America created a flood of refugees. Many Americans were shocked by the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero and the murder of four women missionaries (including three sisters) in El Salvador. When the Reagan Administration denied refugee status to families fleeing the violence, several orders offered sanctuary, including the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael.
