The plight of orphaned children in urban centers was a major concern during the 1800s, and sisters answered the call. The Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose operated St. Mary’s of the Palms in Ukiah, where they loved, clothed, housed, educated, and LOVED the orphans. Mother Pia Backes, foundress of the Mission San Jose Dominicans, is at the back right.
