The California farmworkers’ struggle brought many orders into the fight for justice. Sister Florence Zweber, a Sister of St. Francis, Rochester, Minnesota, answered the UFW’s call for healthcare workers in 1976. She served first as a nurse, but when leader Cesar Chavez learned of her background in finance, he asked her to head the union’s accounting department. As with many sisters the movement transformed her: “…I have lost all taste for anything extravagant. Things like that seem so empty to me now.”
