Executive Order 9066 ordered the removal of all Japanese and Japanese Americans from the West Coast in 1942. Maryknoll Sisters and Fathers accompanied parishioners from the Los Angeles Catholic Mission to Manzanar, one of 10 incarceration centers. Shortly before the war, Antoinette Yae Ono, a Nisei (second-generation Japanese American) had converted to Catholicism. In camp she became a Maryknoll sister, taking the name Sister Paul Miki.
