Pomo Indian basket, Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, 1920s

The Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose began working with American Indians in Ukiah in 1903. One of the first to arrive was Sister Agatha Watts, herself a Mariposa Indian. Pomo Indians gave baby carriers like this one to the sisters to aid their work with orphans.
